Strong Roots, Stronger Community - Reflections at the halfway mark of my Climate Impact Corps Service
As an AmeriCorps member with the Climate Impact Corps at the Creative Enterprise Zone, I’ve experienced firsthand how much goes into fostering environmental resilience and bringing a community together. Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of coordinating our 100 Trees Initiative, a project that combines environmental impact with community engagement.
From the start, my service has been intense yet deeply rewarding.
The first few months were a whirlwind—jumping headfirst into managing a large-scale project with a community that’s passionate about expanding our tree canopy. Every day brought a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn. Whether it was marketing the initiative, coordinating fieldwork, managing watering schedules, or analyzing data, I quickly realized how multifaceted this work is. I was surprised at how much I got to do—balancing high-stakes tasks like selecting planting sites, completing utility checks, and building partnerships, all while staying focused on our shared goal.
One of the most memorable moments came on planting day. Seeing volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to dig, plant, and care for the new trees was a powerful reminder of the collective effort it takes to make a difference. I was particularly proud when a volunteer shared how meaningful it was to contribute to something that would benefit their neighborhood for decades to come. It was then I realized the impact of my role—not just in coordinating logistics but in empowering others to take ownership of their environment.
I’ve learned that planting trees isn’t just about digging holes in the ground. It’s about creating a well-rounded approach to environmental stewardship that requires technical skills, organizational acumen, and community-building. From using software to identify planting sites and maintaining an up-to-date inventory to working with the city, property owners, and volunteers, every step in the process matters.
One challenge I’ve overcome was managing the steep learning curve of this role. Each step taught me more about resilience—both the kind we build in ecosystems and the kind I’ve developed as a leader. These experiences have opened my eyes to the importance of urban canopy cover and how local efforts can have a global impact.
What keeps me going are the people I meet—fellow activists, volunteers, and community members who share the same vision for a greener, healthier future. They inspire me daily and remind me why I chose this path. I look forward to every opportunity to make connections, foster growth, and ensure that these trees, and our community, thrive long after my term ends.
